Joe’s AMBRO at the CRC

Joe Alexander’s AMBRO will make it’s race track debut at the CRC. We hope he’ll run it in the Kaastner Cup race, but even if all he does is parade it and have it in the Triumph paddock, it will be a wonderful thing to see.

This has been a labor of love for Joe. I know he was a friend and fan of Bill Ames and always thought the AMBRO design was spectacular. He’s been working on his version for several years and its a beautiful thing, beautifully built. The members of the FOT (Friends Of Triumph) have been watching the progress over the years, seeing this gorgeous car on the track is going to be very exciting.

SOVREN Poster for the CRC

SOVREN is definitely rolling out the red carpet for Triumphs at the Columbia River Classic. The poster features Jeff Quick’s TR4, and includes special mention of the Kastner Cup and the Racing Triumphs. I certainly hope we’re going to see some of the midwest racing Triumphs here. If you come once for the CRC, you’ll come again. It’s probably the most LBC-oriented (Little British Car) events you’ll ever attend–we share a small section of  the Paddock and the large grass areas at PIR with the All British Field Meet.  You’ll also find more racing than you can probably handle. Four days on track if you do the test-and-tune day as well.

Five races, one qualifier/practice, one Triumph-only race, three warmup/test sessions. It’s a racing smorgasbord–all you can eat.

Pretty Peyote

I know, I know, it’s kind of an oymoron, but Tony Garmey at Horizon Racing has really outdone himself getting Peyote into shape for it’s fiftieth birthday year. Gone is the ass end that looked like an aluminum bag full of potatoes. Gone are the hideous front fenders and the patched-together panels. And what is added are features that appear in the very first iteration of the car in 1959.

When I first saw the back end of the car I thought “what the heck are you doing, Tony, we’re not inventing new stuff”. Tony pointed me to this picture on my own website (http://allaluminumtour.com) that shows the back end with a opening in the rear panel and a British-style number plate.

Original Peyote Rear End

What a surprise. Tony’s interpretation is slicker, but definitely true to the original. I was also very surprised to see a huge fuel tank (maybe a cell?) in the place of the beer keg that Peyote sported when I first got it. Dick Buckingham has been after me to restore the keg with a bladder in it (I know he just likes the notion of a beer keg in the back of Peyote), now I have a legit argument, if not for the current location then at least for the style.

peyote after resto

Tony also did a lot of work on the sides of the car, smoothing out the transitions and making everything fit better.

Just goes to show, you CAN make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

New Guy

Hi, I’m new here and I recently bought a 1964 Triumph TR4.  It’s white and was the subject of a 3 year frame off restoration. The restoration was one done out of love, or obsession as is the case for most of us, and is a very nice one. It’s not perfect, but what is?

I really didn’t want a white TR, but I couldn’t resist this one, especially at the price I paid for it. I’ll post some photos of it so you can judge for yourself.

I’ve been chomping at the bit to add my own touches to the car, which was 100% dead stock when I bought it, but I’ve been going at it slowly. I don’t want to ruin the extremely sympathetic restoration, but at the same time, I do want to make a few modifications, mainly performance stuff. I think I can do most of it without really disturbing much at all.

The funny thing, is that I’ve probably talked to a dozen “experts” about the modifications, and not one of them has been in agreement with the other. Sometimes I feel like I’m dealing with a bunch of lawyers…no offense if anyone here is a lawyer. So, I’ve decided to distill and refine what I’ve learned from everyone and just go about it on my own. If I mess up, that’s alright. The one thing I’ve learned about cars over the years is that anything can be fixed. Just time, patience and plenty of $$$$.

I’m glad I found this site and look forward to spending some time here with fellow Triumph lovers.

I have photos of most (if not all) of midwest FOT members. I probably have shots of a number of others from events over the years. If you need a photo for this site I’ll be glad to supply it at no cost. Just contact me.

Send Us Your Car

Or at least some pictures. If you plan to attend, even if you’re not 100 percent sure, please send us some photos of your car and tell a bit about it and you. You’ll find a very handy form to do this in the FORMS tab. You can upload three car photos. If you want to send more just fill out a second form with just the basic info and use the upload buttons.

Site Launch

This is the official site for the FOT focus event, the Kastner Cup at the Columbia River Classic Road Race. This race is a great event on it’s own, and it’s going to be even better with hordes of Triumph and Triumph-powered Race, Show and street cars cluttering up the place and lubricating the paddock.

The CRC is held on Labor Day Weekend, September 5-7, 2009. Yes, it’s a three day event, and yes, we race all three days. You’ll have more track time than you know what to do with. Traditionally the Lotus Club also has a Test and Tune day on Friday, I assume they will do that again this year. Very reasonably priced, and run in a very laid back but very professional manner. Race cars of any marque are generally invited, you can probably even run your street Triumph if you like, but it would be wise to check with the Portland Lotus club before you plan on that.

The parties at the CRC also have a tradition of being over the top. For several years we had them at a restored 1930’s Signal Gas Station in St. Johns, and most people came in vintage dress. I expect this year’s party will be at the track, but we are encouraging vintage dress, and we’re working on a vintage fashion show. Anyone who attended the previous CRC parties fondly recalls the spectacular shows, with gorgeous models in outfits that matched or complimented the great cars that carried them to the runway. More fun than a greasy car guy might expect.

Of course Kas will be there to decide the recipient of the Kastner Cup. The SOVREN officials were positively giddy when I told them Kas would be there. I guess we folks that see him frequently and know what a regular guy he is don’t realize quite how much esteem and respect people accord to our friend.

I know it’s a long tow for you east coasters, but there’s no better way to take the bad taste of a lousy economic time out of your mouth than a good road trip. At least gasoline isn’t still through the roof. We can promise you an event that you’ll remember.

For the non-roadracing FOTers, we’re working on an autocross, and the All British Field Meet shares the venue and date. There will be a huge turnout of British cars, and I expect our promotional efforts will attract a lot of Triumphs from across the US and Canada. You’ll be most welcome.
